We have been enjoying the snow in K105! Along with getting out and playing in the snow during Outdoor Explore and Recess, we have been reading stories about the snow. One of our favorites was The Snowy Day by our author/illustrator of the month Ezra Jack Keats. After we read this story, we had a discussion about characters and setting. Later, we made our own version of the story. Check it out! We were very lucky to have a visit from an author/illustrator named Miko Imai. Miko shared her three children's books: Little Lumpty, Lilly's Secret, and Sebastian's Trumpet. She told us about the inspiration for these stories and discussed their important messages. Later, she showed the process she goes through to create a cover for one of her stories. Finally, with Miko's help the children drew their own copy of one of her characters. It was wonderful to learn from such an expert! In Reading we have been exploring our calendar more deeply. We've been singing songs and practicing the days of the week. The children each completed a "weekdays book" by writing about a favorite activity for each day of the week. They also got to make their own days of the week puzzle to help them practice sequencing the days of the week. We celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by reading biographies, learning songs, and discussing his life and work. This is a complex topic, and the children had a great discussion. During TEAM Meeting, we read The Peace Book and thought about how we could spread peace. Following our Math unit on measuring, we shifted our focus to composing and decomposing numbers. We have been learning lots of new games in Math! Not only are these games fun, but they teach important concepts and help with counting and early addition skills. One example is "Build On", an extension of a previous game. Children build a number on a ten frame, and roll a die to determine additional chips to add. Another game, "Racing Bears", challenged the children to collect "honey" by using their dice rolls to move bears on a track. Since two dice were rolled, children had higher numbers to work with. They could split their numbers in various ways, which provided practice working with these numbers. In Discovery, we used eggs to begin our exploration of balance. The children were challenged to balance their eggs somewhere in the classroom. Later we recited "Humpty Dumpty" and the children tried to balance their eggs on a "wall". We will be continuing our study of balance over the coming weeks. Check out some more pictures from the last two weeks below...
