Magnificent Mittens
We recently spent some time on learning connected to the story of The Mitten. In Art, the children created mittens with Ms. Pearce which Mrs. Weaver turned into a mitten display. After reading a version by our author of the month Jan Brett, the children focused on the characters in the story and created representations of them and their own mitten to use in a retelling. This is an important skill in Reading.
Our theme also carried over into Math. The children completed two different formats of word problems within this theme.
Balance On Your Toes, Balance On Your Nose
In Discovery we continued our study of balance. This time we got our bodies involved. First, we practiced balancing on one foot. Next, we tried to use different parts of our body to keep a cup balanced. Again, the focus was defining balance as when something stays up or doesn't fall.
Balance Your Balance
In a cross-curricular experience between Math and Discovery, we explored balances and weight. Again, we did not use standard measurements but measured through comparison. This meant determining which of two objects weighed more, or "went down". Later, we used cubes and bears to measure weight.
Even More to Learn and Explore
The children continue to enjoy Learn and Explore. Art has been a favorite area, and recently the children have been especially interested in making puppets. They even took turns using their bodies as a stage for their puppet shows!
We are a TEAM
For TEAM Meeting we have continued to talk about kindness and friendship. We read Spaghetti in a Hotdog Bun, a story about being yourself and being kind to others. We also talked about how teammates care about each other and how we are also part of a school that is a team. One of our teammates, our custodian Mr. Mark, recently had surgery. We made him cards to help cheer him up.
