Thankful for Thanksgiving
We celebrated Thanksgiving in K105 by focusing on the tradition of giving thanks. We read The Thanksgiving Treat, the story of a boy looking for a way to help his family on Thanksgiving. Along with the message of the story we focused on the important elements of setting and problem. We also read Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks, which gave us some ideas of what we might be thankful for. The children each wrote about something they are thankful for in response.
Kindergarteners Can Be Kind
Kindergarteners Can Compare
In Math, we finished our unit on counting and comparing. During the week, we focused on comparing more than two quantities. We used our Unifix cubes again, this time taking four handfuls and ordering them smallest to largest. We also played a game called "Ordering Cards" where we had to properly order four cards.
The Shape of Things
This week in Math we began our unit on 2D shapes. We began by noticing that shapes are all around us. We read The Shape of Things and used this story as inspiration for our own shape creations. Check them out!
We discussed the characteristics of common shapes, especially how many sides and points each shape has. The children got some hands on experience with shapes as they rotated through four different shape stations: bingo, geoboards, play dough, and pattern blocks. We even did a challenging shape word problem! We'll continue our learning on shapes in the coming weeks.
Fun on the Farm
This week in Literacy we read The Farm Concert. We focused on what we could learn from both the illustrations and the text. One thing we noticed is that the beginning of the story starts with large text to indicate the animals are being loud while the second half has small text to indicate they are being quiet. We also discussed what we could learn from looking at their expressions. In TEAM Meeting we read The Cow That Went Oink. We noticed how the author used speech bubbles in this tale of a unique cow and pig. Our discussion also focused on being proud of who you are and how the cow and pig helped each other.
Green Thumbs
In Discover we continued our study of living things by introducing a mystery object. A few children correctly identified the object as a bulb but we had many other creative guesses such as a root or a dirty muffin. We talked about whether the bulb is a living thing or not and what it needs to survive before planting it. We're looking forward to observing it's growth over the coming weeks. |
We fit a lot into the last week and a half, check out a few more shots below...
